The ultimate guide to Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a great way to enhance your complexion and create a smooth base for applying makeup. This blog is your ultimate guide to dermaplaning.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning involves using a scalpel to remove unwanted hair and dead skin cells from the face. Unwanted hair on the face is often referred to as ‘peach fuzz’ which can create an uneven complexion when makeup is applied. As well as removing dead skin cells, this treatment can also be used to remove the build up of makeup and other products such as fake tan.

How can I prepare for my beauty treatment?

After deciding to have this beauty treatment, your skilled practitioner will tell you everything you need to know about how to prepare your skin. You should avoid waxing, sun exposure, shaving, laser hair removal, electrolysis and depilatory creams. Harsh exfoliants should also not be used along with some ingredients often found in beauty products. Your practitioner will provide you with a list of ingredients to avoid for at least one week before your appointment.

Before your appointment, your practitioner will ask you some questions regarding your skin. These can include questions regarding skin sensitivity, cuts, dermatitis and rosacea. The practitioner will then decide whether this treatment is right for you.

What happens at my dermaplaning appointment?

During your appointment, your face will be cleansed to ensure that there is no makeup or other product on the skin. After cleansing, a blunt scalpel will be pulled across areas of the face such as the forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and neck. The direction and motion of the scalpel will remove unwanted hairs and any dead skin cells.

What about dermaplaning aftercare?

Your practitioner will provide you with all of the necessary aftercare details based on your treatment. You should be gentle with the treated skin and avoid the sun if possible. When outside, factor 50 should be worn for maximum protection. You should avoid most other facial treatments for at least 2 weeks after having dermaplaning.

Following the appointment, you may experience some redness and blotchiness, this is normal and your complexion should return to normal within a few days. Some people also experience peeling after the treatment, you should keep your skin hydrated by applying serums regularly.

The results?

The results from your dermaplaning treatment will be visible immediately. After multiple treatments, you can expect to experience benefits such as fewer wrinkles and fewer dark spots.

Many individuals worry that after removing facial hair in this way, it will grow back thicker and darker, this is not true. Removal of this hair is very beneficial and reduces the chances of dirt and debris getting caught which leads to a dull and uneven complexion. If you’re wanting smoother skin then dermaplaning could be the treatment for you.
